How Does Osteo-Pet® Professional Joint Formula With Glucosamine Chondroitin Work to Restore a Dog's Damaged Hips and Joints?

Dogs can experience cartilage breakdown due to injury, everyday wear and tear, or through a natural disease called Osteoarthritis. Osteo-Pet® provides three natural nutrients that joints need to rebuild cartilage damaged by Osteoarthritis. The supplements provided are Glucosamine HCl, Chondroitin Sulfate, and MSM. Let's discuss what they are and where they come from below.

What Is Glucosamine for Dogs?

Glucosamine (C6H13NO5) is a monosaccharide that is made up of four elements, Carbon, Hydrogen, Nitrogen, and Oxygen. It is an amino sugar in a crystalline compound that is in the connective tissue in synovial joints. It is a precursor for glycosaminoglycan (GAG), and GAGs are used to build the framework that supports cartilage1. Simply put, it is a primary ingredient of joint cartilage.

  • What Are the Different Forms of Glucosamine?

Glucosamine binds to salts for stability and deliverability. The most common forms are Glucosamine Hydrochloride (HCl), Glucosamine Sulfate and N-Acetyl Glucosamine (NAG).

  • Which Is the Most Effective Form of Glucosamine?

Glucosamine Hydrochloride (HCl) and Glucosamine Sulfate or Glucosamine Sulphate receive the most research. Both forms do well in testing, but the active ingredient in any glucosamine salt is the glucosamine, and that the hydrochloride or sulfate is just for stability and delivery. While the Sulfate form has been around longer and has been tested longer, the HCl form is used more in both human and pet supplements due to its success with consumers.

  • Where Does Glucosamine Come From?

Glucosamine is a natural material harvested from the exoskeleton of shellfish like lobsters or crabs2. Substances that break down complex polysaccharides into monosaccharides are used on the shellfish shells to release the glucosamine. Since most glucosamine is derived from shellfish, a warning is placed on the bottle for people that are allergic to shellfish. Other brands of glucosamine may be derived from mushrooms and corn.

  • Is Glucosamine Safe for Dogs?

Yes. It has an outstanding safety record, being used safely with dogs for over the last twenty years and most veterinarian's sell it in their offices. In Europe, glucosamine is licensed as a medical drug for human Osteoarthritis3.

What Is Chondroitin for Dogs?

Chondroitin Sulfate is the next ingredient in Osteo-Pet® Professional Joint Care. It is made from the elements Carbon, Hydrogen, Nitrogen, Oxygen, and Sulfur. Chondroitin Sulfate is a sulfated glycosaminoglycan (GAG) and a structural component of cartilage4.

  • Where Does Chondroitin Sulfate Come From?

Chondroitin Sulfate is usually derived from bovine (cow) trachea, but can come from sharks or pigs.5

  • Why Are Glucosamine and Chondroitin Usually Combined?

Randomized double-blind trials on glucosamine chondroitin for dogs have shown a positive effect in dogs with osteoarthritis6. Together, these two proven nutrients have been shown to help rebuild worn and damaged cartilage.*

What is MSM for dogs?

MSM is short for Methylsulfonylmethane, a natural substance high in sulfur.  Disulfide bonds are the bonds between two sulfur atoms.  Disulfide bonds link glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) together. MSM helps to strengthen these bonds.

What Is Dog Arthritis? What Are Its Symptoms?

There are two major types of arthritis, namely, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoarthritis.

Rheumatoid Arthritis causes joints to become swollen. This inflammation occurs when your dog's immune system is not working properly, and the immune system begins to "attack" healthy tissues.

The Centers for Disease Contol and Prevention define Osteoarthritis as “a disease of the entire joint involving the cartilage, joint lining, and underlying bone”. Osteoarthritis is when the cartilage has worn out or down. Since dogs mature faster than people do, a dog that is 6-9 years old may be past middle age, on it's way to becoming a senior dog. If it is limping, it may already be suffering from early onset Osteoarthritis.

The movable joints found in animals are called synovial  joints.  If a dog has Osteoarthritis, the ends of the bones begin to lose cartilage and synovium.  Synovium is a very slippery membrane inside of synovial joints. Loss of cartilage and synovium leads to bone rubbing against bone. This bone rubbing against bone is painful.  Joint stiffness, slowness in getting up or down, limping or not wanting to play as much can all be symptoms of dog arthritis.

What Is Hip Dysplasia And What Are Its Symptoms?

Hip dysplasia is a misalignment of the hip joints due to abnormal bone formation or weak support from muscles and ligaments that keep the joint in place. The misalignment occurs when the ball at the head of the femur bone doesn't smoothly fit into the hip's socket.

These abnormalities may be a genetic anomaly present from birth and may have worsened as the dog was still in its developmental stage. Congenital Hip dysplasia usually occurs in larger breeds of dogs like German Shepards, Mastiffs, Pit Bulls, and Rottweilers, but can also occur in smaller breeds like Basset Hounds and Bulldogs.  It can even occur in toy breeds, specifically Pugs.

Hip Dysplasia symptoms are similar to osteoarthritis in dogs but involve the hip area versus the knee, elbow or ankle.

Does Glucosamine Have Any Side Effects?
What Happens with an Incorrect Dosage or Overdose?

While glucosamine is 100% safe, a tiny percentage of dogs with food allergies may have a reaction to it.  Usually, they'll have diarrhea.  Fortunately, the toxicity level is very small, and if you follow the recommended dosage and provide the proper amount, your dog will not have any problems.

Some frequently asked questions regarding Glucosamine for dogs.

What can I give my pet for pain? Does glucosamine chondroitin stop joint pain?

Glucosamine is a natural ingredient that is the primary building block of cartilage.  However, it is not an NSAID (Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug). The most common NSAIDs are Rimadyl, Novox, Deramaxx, and Meloxicam. These medicines are painkillers and work as anti-inflammatories on the pain associated with arthritis. While glucosamine is not an NSAID or a painkiller, it does work to help rebuild and repair joint cartilage.

Is this the most powerful Osteo-Pet® formula available?

Our strongest joint supplement for dogs is our Osteo-Pet® Total Joint Care Formula.  It is available in a 60ct, 180ct or 720ct tablet (red label) or a 200ct soft chew (purple label).
