Sam-e for Liver
Sam-e (S-adenosylmethionine) is a natural substance, a metabolite of the amino acid methionine which is made by our body. Our bodies use it in our tissues, organs and systems. While Sam-e can assist in naturally restoring a healthy mood and promoting joint health, it's ability regarding liver repair and renewal make it a truly amazing supplement. Sam-e effectiveness can be explained by first examining the liver's function.
What and Where is the Liver?
Your liver is the largest organ inside your body. It is pinkish brown in color, triangular in shape, weighs approximately 3 pounds and has four unequal sections called lobes. It resides on the right side of the abdominal cavity, directly underneath your diaphragm. The hepatic artery and portal vein support the liver's blood supply. The portal vein carries blood containing digested food from the small intestine. These blood vessels in the liver subdivide many times, ending in very small capillaries. Each capillary leads to a lobule. Thousands of lobules make up liver tissue, with each lobule being made up of millions of hepatic cells called hepatocytes, the basic metabolic cell of the liver.
What is the Liver's function?
When functioning properly, your liver is a powerful, potent work horse. It supports nearly every organ in your body in some way. Simply put, it creates proteins, good cholesterol, hormones and fats. The liver secretes bile and bile breaks down fats and is also vital for carbohydrate metabolism. Your liver breaks down alcohol, insulin, toxins and medication for proper drug metabolism. It stores vitamins and filters out bacteria from the blood. These are just some of it's functions; It does a lot more. Suffice it to say, if your liver is having trouble, you're having trouble as well.
What is the Sam-e / Liver Health Relationship?
While your liver is doing all of this work, it needs Glutathione. Glutathione is the liver's natural antioxidant. It is used to prevent damage from the free radicals released during the liver's natural day to day process. When there is not enough glutathione, the liver is overcome and develops Cirrhosis. Liver cirrhosis is when the liver tissue scars and has limited function. In some cases, liver inflammation and enlargement can occur. Your liver uses its supply of SAM-e to make glutathione.
So why not take glutathione? Glutathione isn't processed by the body well, passing through the small intestine without being absorbed. SAM-e supplements can come to the rescue. SAM-e is a precursor to glutathione, meaning SAM-e is vital to making glutathione. That's how SAM-e benefits the liver, by providing the necessary components that the liver needs to help itself repair and recover.
So, why take Nature Made's Sam-e Complete?
After much research and a complete review of the SAM-e brands available; we are proud to offer Nature Made's SAM-e. Nature Made has a rich history of producing quality supplements. Their SAM-e is enteric coated, so the SAM-e is absorbed in the small intestine versus the stomach. While other brands offer their SAM-e in bottles, Nature Made has each enteric-coated SAM-e protected in a blister so it cannot absorb moisture from the air. (SAM-e is extremely hydroscopic).
