Chondroitin for dogs - Everything you need to know

Chondroitin for dogs is a supplement used for arthritis and joint health. It's a natural ingredient that improves the shock absorbing ability of the collagen in cartilage. It also slows the natural enzymes that break-down cartilage.

Chondroitin helps maintain water in the cartilage, giving it additional spring and flexibility.

Learn how chondroitin combined with other ingredients like glucosamine can restore the joint health of your pet.

What Is Chondroitin for Dogs?

Chondroitin sulfate is sold as a dietary supplement in the United States and as a pharmaceutical in Europe.

It is a natural component found in synovial cartilage like the knee, ankle, hip, toes, and other areas. While in the past it has been typically sourced from animal cartilage like sharks and beef, but it is now mainly sourced from bovine trachea. The gristle on the end of animal bones has chondroitin, but not as nearly as much as the doses found in pet supplements.

Chondroitin is a chondroprotective agent. It is usually combined with supplements like glucosamine for dogs, msm and others like it. It comes in chewable tablets, liquids, and soft chews.

How Does Chondroitin Help Dogs?

Chondroitin is usually used to improve joint health. It's an element of your dog's joint cartilage. Chondroitin enhances the joints by providing resistance to the compression of the weight on the joints. It does this by improving the collagen in joint cartilage.

Your dog's body also naturally breaks down worn cartilage in its joints. Chondroitin hinders the enzymes that break down the collagen in cartilage.

It also keeps water in the cartilage. Cartilage maintains the joints bounce and elasticity.

How Much Chondroitin Should I Give My Dog?

Most veterinarians recommend 400 mg of chondroitin for every 25 lbs for every 12 hours. Some veterinarians and researchers recommend cutting back on the dosage after 4-6 weeks. We recommend continuing with the complete and full dose.

What Is the Best Type of Chondroitin?

There are many different types of chondroitin for pets. The list includes: Calcium chondroitin sulfate, chondroitin polysulfate, chondroitin polysulphate, amongst others. However, the most studied and effective form is chondroitin sulfate.

Why Are Glucosamine And Chondroitin Combined?

Many of the early studies in the 80's used both glucosamine and chondroitin together to study their effects on renewing joint cartilage. They work well together, so they are usually sold together. Unfortunately, chondroitin is typically much more expensive than glucosamine. This is why some formulas don't use the full 400 mg amount.

Glucosamine is usually used to help renew and build new cartilage and chondroitin is used to stop the enzymes that break cartilage down.

How Does Chondroitin Taste?

Not good. It stinks to both dogs and humans. We don't notice it because it when humans swallow it, it's enclosed in a capsule or in a pill. When given to dogs in a chewable tablet, it needs to be disguised with a lot of flavors. Osteo-Pet formulas use a tremendous amount of cheese and bacon to mask the odors of chondroitin and other supplements.
